How to add -s to verbs in Present Simple (3rd person singular)
Let’s explain clearly why "play" becomes "plays" and NOT "plaies."
📘 Rule: How to add -s to verbs in Present Simple (3rd person singular)
When the subject is he, she, or it, we usually add -s to the verb:
He plays
She eats
It rains
🔤 Rule for verbs ending in -y:
✅ If the verb ends in a vowel + y, just add -s:
play → plays
enjoy → enjoys
say → says
✔ Because the letter before y is a vowel (a, e, i, o, u)
❌ If the verb ends in a consonant + y, change y to i and add -es:
study → studies
cry → cries
✔ Because the letter before y is a consonant
✨ So in your case:
play ends in "a + y" → vowel + y
✅ So we just add s → plays
❌ "plaies" is incorrect because:
"play" ends in a vowel + y
You don’t change "y" to "i" after a vowel
✅ Correct:
play → plays
study → studies
